Heddon made it two wins from two in the Hand’s Cup with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Haltwhistle Railway.
On a blustery day at Selman park, Heddon decided to kick against the wind in the first half, aiming to use the wind to their advantage in the second.
The visitors came out of the traps quickly, forcing a few corners due to their high pressing game and direct play. Gradually, Heddon started to get into the game, harassing the opposition, and looking to get the ball down when in possession.
The deadlock was broken 20 minutes in, Dannis Bergkamp (his words) Walker plucking the ball out of the air from Sean’s cross, steadying himself before firing into the bottom left corner. A second goal followed soon after, excellent link up play down the left leading to Jamie laying the ball on to man of the match, Elliott to poke past the Railway keeper.
As is becoming a recurring theme in recent weeks, Heddon managed to contrive to concede yet another soft goal. The Haltwhistle centre midfielder was allowed to stride forward unchallenged, and despite two good saves from Waddsy, he was given a third bite of the cherry to put it into the net and get Railway back into the game.
Happily, Heddon didn’t allow this to upset their rhythm, Walker blasting over from close range and Hownam seing his shot saved. On the stroke of half time, Heddon made sure of the points, Hownam passing the ball to the overlapping Dan Ramshaw, who fired across goal to the onrushing Ross Bailey, who thumped the ball home.
The second half was a bit of a non-event, with the wind ruining the prospects of seeing any decent football played, and Heddon looking very comfortable.
Overall, a satisfactory victory, some room for improvement but encouraging signs all the same.
Ratings compiled by Phil Edmondson
