A tough afternoon in Sutton Coldfield, where the boys had the stuffing knocked out of them early in the game with two quick goals.
The first came from a soft free-kick, where the ref seemed to change his mind as the ball had already gone for a corner. The Sutton player rattled the underside of the bar and it fell kindly to a couple of Sutton lads who bundled it in. That set the tone for the first half, as we just couldn’t apply enough pressure to get them on the back foot and we ended up going in to half time a disappointing 5-0 down.
Words needed to be said at half time, as the boys were clearly frustrated but not doing anything about it. I reminded them I had to pull them apart at training because they were being too aggressive, yet against this opposition we were being soft and letting them dominate us. A line was drawn under the first half showing and the plan was to get back out there and show what we’re really made of.
I have to say, the boys responded very well and although we conceded through a decent strike, we finally managed to get one ourselves after Oscar slid the ball through to Zak R who, in typical Zak style, beat the defender and slammed home.
We could’ve had a couple more and kept the pressure on with several corners, but the Sutton keeper pulled off a string of decent saves to keep us frustrated.
The second half finished 1-1 and it was a proud display, one we can build on.
We have a couple of niggly injuries in the squad and hopefully we can get everyone fit and firing in the next few weeks.
I have to say, Harrison and the defensive players worked tirelessly, and for their efforts can consider themselves unlucky to concede 6 goals today.
Zak R was rightfully awarded man of the match, as he simply did not give up and fought to the end, getting himself on the score sheet to put him on 4 goals in 2 games.
Keep it up, Zak!
