After suffering a blow at training yesterday, where Harry fractured his collarbone, the Reds came up against promotion-chasing Boldmere St Michael’s.
After last time, we knew this game would be tough, as Boldmere are a physical side, and they’ve had some very good results of late.
The Reds started on the front foot and managed to carve out several chances but their keeper was equal to them. It wouldn’t be too long before the Reds would go ahead, when the ball dropped to Jack in their box and he made no mistake smashing home.
The game was simmering nicely and Hampton had several opportunities to extend the lead, but luck wasn’t with us today and that was epitomised by the dubious penalty awarded to Boldmere for “handball”. I was closer than the ref and this was a poor decision, where personally I felt he was swayed by the opposition appeals. Nevertheless, the Boldmere player slotted past Harrison and somehow the game was now level.
HT 1-1.
The second half again saw Hampton on the front foot, but it was Boldmere who took the lead when they had some fortune after mis-hitting the initial chance, only for it to fall to another Boldmere player who slotted home. 1-2.
From there on, it was all Hampton. Boldmere to their credit fought for everything, but how Hampton failed to score is beyond me. Chances from Fin, Oscar and Rushy amongst others, went begging, none more so than the chance late-on that fell to Rushy which I still can’t understand how it missed… but that’s the way it goes sometimes and I could honestly say that every single one of the lads worked their socks off and deserved at least a draw from that game… just shows how important that penalty decision was in the end. On another day, we romp home 5-1 winners there but it wasn’t to be.
Final score 1-2.
I was very proud of the lads today and how they handled a difficult match, with lots of noise on the sidelines and some dark-arts on the pitch, our boys really showed their class and football is by no means all about results.
Some outstanding performances again today, with Jack and Finley excelling, but MOTM this week went to JP who I thought was a monster again, very unfortunate to concede a penalty but got on with it and gave them hell for the rest of the game.
2 more games to go and hopefully we cap off a fine season in style.
