vs Petts Wood Cardinals

Home league match

On Sunday 7 December 2025, the Glebe U9 Jaguars hosted Petts Wood Cardinals at Chislehurst in a 7-a-side league match, kicking off promptly at 9:00am. Despite being without several players due to absence and illness, the Jaguars put in a determined and hardworking performance, eventually falling 7–4 in a thrilling encounter that entertained the crowd from start to finish.

With a reduced squad and no substitutes available, Glebe lined up bravely in a 3-2-1 formation. Jax Surucu took his place in goal, organising a defence of Micky Gorringe on the right, Freddie Brown centrally, and Harrison Elsey on the left. In midfield, Winston Goody and Lewis Whyte covered huge ground to connect defence and attack, while George Martin led the line up front, working tirelessly to create chances despite the physical demands of playing the full match.

Petts Wood Cardinals started quickly, scoring in the 3rd and 8th minutes before adding a third by the 12th. Despite the early pressure, Glebe showed admirable resilience and hit back through a well-taken goal by central midfielder Winston Goody in the 14th minute. Petts Wood added a fourth shortly afterwards, and the first half ended with the Jaguars battling bravely to stay in the contest.

The second half showcased Glebe’s character. A burst of goals in the 31st and 34th minutes reignited the match and highlighted the team’s refusal to give up, even with tired legs and no rotation options. Although the Cardinals responded quickly and restored their cushion, the Jaguars struck again in the 36th minute, keeping the game competitive and showing impressive teamwork under challenging circumstances.

In the closing stages, Petts Wood added further goals in the 46th and 50th minutes, but the scoreline did not take away from Glebe’s effort, spirit, and togetherness throughout the match.

Midfielder Lewis Whyte stood out with an exceptional all-round display, earning him the player-of-the-match award. His composure, work rate, and willingness to take responsibility in a depleted squad were key positives for Glebe.

In summary, although Petts Wood Cardinals secured the win with their clinical finishing, the Glebe U9 Jaguars can be proud of a performance full of heart, resilience, and commitment—especially given the adversity of missing several players and having no substitutes on the day.

A big thank you to Leo from the Lions, who stepped in at short notice and made a brilliant impact. He slotted in seamlessly and scored two excellent goals, giving the team a huge lift on the day.
