Futbol Club de NRG faced off against Merchandisers FC in a league away match at the Chikangwe High School Grounds on 5th July 2025, kicking off at 4:00pm. The match concluded with a convincing 3-1 victory for NRG, showcasing their attacking prowess and resilience in defence.
NRG adopted a 4-3-3 formation, which allowed them to maintain a strong presence in both midfield and attack. Tichaona Tichaona was stationed in goal, while Tadiwa Kanyama and Joseph Kalusa occupied the right and left defensive flanks respectively. Central defenders Craig Madhochi and Lloyd Nyandoro provided stability at the back. The midfield trio consisted of Leon Chipfakacha on the right, Douglas Zhanewo in the centre, and Jona T Moto on the left, tasked with linking play and supporting the forwards. Up front, Darlington Kalusa and Emmanuel Marikopo flanked striker Casper Mubika, who was expected to lead the line and convert chances.
The substitutes for the match included Nigel J Mwasila and Smart Samatiya, who would later play pivotal roles in the second half.
The match began with Merchandisers FC striking first, taking the lead in the 22nd minute. This early setback for NRG could have rattled their confidence, but they responded positively. Just ten minutes later, Joseph Kalusa equalised for NRG, heading home from close range after a well-delivered free kick by Tadiwa Kanyama.
The momentum shifted further in NRG's favour when Darlington Kalusa scored a stunning direct free kick in the 41st minute, putting his side ahead just before the half-time whistle. However, the first half was not without its controversies, as goalkeeper Tichaona Tichaona received a yellow card in the 34th minute for a minor infringement, followed closely by a yellow card for Craig Madhochi in the 42nd minute, indicating a tense atmosphere as both teams battled for control.
As the second half commenced, NRG maintained their lead and made tactical adjustments. In the 66th minute, Nigel J Mwasila replaced Tadiwa Kanyama, bringing fresh legs to the midfield. The introduction of Mwasila proved crucial, as he scored a remarkable goal from outside the area in the 86th minute, with Smart Samatiya providing the assist. This goal sealed the victory for NRG, showcasing their attacking depth and ability to capitalise on opportunities.
Merchandisers FC struggled to respond effectively to NRG's offensive onslaught, and despite their efforts, they could not find a way back into the match. The referee, Misheck, managed the game with a firm hand, ensuring that the match flowed smoothly despite the physicality displayed by both sides.
In the end, NRG's performance was highlighted by their attacking flair and solid defensive work, with Darlington Kalusa earning the accolade of Player of the Match for his influential display. The victory not only boosts NRG's league standing but also reinforces their confidence as they continue their campaign.
