Another day, another cup upset for Frow. It's a long old poke down to Lancing and we were delighted to be greeted by various youths on street corners with their hoods up. Nevertheless, we skipped merrily into the changing room surrounded by a cage and begun the warm up.
Tactical magician Big Ron had decided to go with a 4-5-1, dropping Diego Holah into his favoured number 10 role, but to also help with the battle in the middle. It paid off, as Frow showed a solid performance and looked dangerous on the counter.
With barely 20 minutes played, Shaqiri Monnery took a battering to the knee, which left him motionless on the ground. Their charming number 4 proceeded to calling him a **** before walking away. On came Fran Garcia and Frow knew that the 11 would have to do a job with no subs remaining.
And that they did. A terrific corner from Diego was headed in by Smithy, and Frow were in front. That's how it stayed until half time, but we knew the second 45 minutes would be tough for us to come away with the win.
Lancing had the better of that next 45, but Frow dug deep and defended excellently. Smithy in particular was colossal at the back, but so were the whole defence and everyone in front of them. The entire team defended as one and they couldn't break us down.
Daniel Pirlo Splarn said he isn't a centre half but he and Smith looked a match made in heaven at times, with Classic K and Eggy looking solid AF at full back. Beano dictated the tempo and Dawes was in full Cattermole mode. P Holah literally put his body on the line and Fran Garcia defended as well as he attacked. Diego ran the show as usual and Leitchy ran his bollocks off. But man of the match went to our number 1, who made a string of fine saves and dominated his area throughout. It had been a tough week for our man in between the sticks, fending off relentless banter on Whatsapp from a permanently drunk Lukaku.
Lancing were clearly a competent side and played the ball nicely, particular at the back and through the middle. But their attacks tended to break down in the final third and we kept our concentration. It was clear that not much was expected of us and the neutrals hadn't anticipated much of a game. We even overheard some of the locals speak about how surprised they were at our fitness levels. Although pretty vocal throughout, their gaffers also showed class at the end by shaking the players' hands and inviting us back for a beer.
Frow are now into the last 16 of the Sussex Intermediate Cup, and are looking forward to getting bollocksed at the Frowmas Social next Saturday... Up the Frow.
