Home league match
On the back of disposing with Lindfield 2-1, Frow were looking to make it 3 wins on the bounce and to continue their unbeaten league record at the Pavilion.
Big Ron was due in Belfast and Spain for the next 3 weeks, raising questions about his tax returns. Along with that, it meant crippled Captain William Irwin was due to be caretaker manager for the foreseeable. We managed to grab Will from his busy schedule, to look back on his thoughts on the game.
Will, how did you feel about taking the reigns?
"Delighted, naturally. I know these gents like my own flesh and blood, and nothing would please me more than to help us get 9 points for Big Ron's return."
How did you set the team up?
"I wanted my wingers to attack, so we went with a punchy 4-3-3. For the first 20 minutes they looked a bit confused. Like primary school children at their first nativity. They kept looking over to me and waving."
But it went well?
"After the first goal, we completely settled and ran away with it. It was a delicious corner from Diego and another bullet header from Smithy. Two minutes later we saw the front 3 come to fruition. Ollie interchanged with Diego, who then finished with a sumptuous lob."
So looking rosy at half time?
"Very much so. 2-0 is a dangerous score though and we couldn't sit on it. We played the second half as if it were 0-0 and I couldn't ask for anything more. The boys who came on also did their part. Benton did a job in the midfield 3 and Parr scored a bullet header from another Diego corner. Jeff did what Jeff does best..."
And what's that?
"Next question geez."
So, summarise the performance for us...
"A great day at the office. AFC Varndeanians are no mugs and they'd won 5 on the bounce. It's always a difficult game against them. Stevens was superb in goal and the back 4 were untouchable. Gardner and Smith are two bastards you wouldn't want to mess with, let alone Classic Kieran and Gil.
The midfield 3 were outstanding as well and had their work cut out, with the 3 in front of them attacking. Splarn, Garcia and Dawes (MOM) were all sensational.
Diego has more assists than he has goals and that says a lot. He's an unselfish creator as well as a scorer. A crucial focal point of the team. The full backs were solid and our wingers were dangerous. All 14 did their bit".
And finally... can you comment on the fans singing 'we want you to stay?'
"Look, Big Ron is the Gaffer, and I'm just keeping his seat warm. I'll be back playing next season and I'll do so 'til I'm 50 odd. The fact that I'm a tactical and motivational magician is a nice by-product of 18 years being a pro on Football Manager. Cuckfield at home next Saturday. Let's get the 3 points".
