Home cup match

Thames failed to progress into round 3 of the Essex Sunday Premier Cup with DC-10 putting 7 past them.

The home side started off well, and saw themselves ahead from a Woods goal.

The in-form striker received a flick from Miller and, Woods seeing the keeper off his line lobbed the ball over him and with once bounce, it hit the roof of the net.

This made the away side step up in their game and from a team move, Thames failed to clear the ball inside the area and it was a simple header at the right post. The goal seemed to deflate Thames and with MIller’s chance going wide, it was soon 1-2 to DC-10 from a team move.

Despite M Harrington and Beldam, handling 10’s attacks, the away side were soon 1-3 up. Thames started to get back into the game but despite out playing DC-10, the final ball seemed to fall flat and cut out.

Soon it was 1-4 as DC’s fitness was the overwhelming factor however, it was helped by Thames losing their formation and allowing the away side to cover a lot of the pitch.

Smith came off to be replaced by Sam Emmerson just before half time.

Tom Wayman finally made his long awaited return/debute to replace Pettifer as Thames looked for an option up top, Thames started off well but again, with the away sides fitness showing, they broke down on the counter attack and with some good movement, created a simple tap in.

Then the most bizarre incident saw Cory Harrington sent off, the keeper came charging off his line to intercept a DC attack, with his outstretched leg, it just clipped the ball and the DC attacker jumped over the challenge, to everyone’s surprise, the referee showed a straight red! Claiming it dented a goal scoring opportunity?

This Incensed Thames and captain Dan Pardoe talked himself into a yellow although, from the side of the pitch, you could hardly blame him!

Manager Tony Harrington quickly made changes and Miller, found himself between the sticks and was soon brought into action stopping a blistering shot.

DC didn’t really take advantage of being a man extra however they did manage to grab a couple more goals to make it 1-7.

Thames weren’t finished and although being a man down, had started to play better and were soon awarded a penalty after bringing down Holt. Up stepped Woods and the little man calmly stepped up and placed it well past the keeper, sending him the wrong way.

Thames now had some belief and playing some decent passing football, saw them add another with Folan lobbing the ball, something that DC may need to address, if he’s beaten that easily.

So with the game at en end, it was a case of too little, too late. A disappointing performance proberbly or the case of again letting themselves down during the game, arguing amongst themselves, more the latter.

Once they can get that out of their system, then we can really see what this team can do.......

It’s all a matter of belief!
