Home cup match
We welcomed Fife side Templehall Blacks to South Road for a highly anticipated Scottish Cup third round tie.
Unsure of what to expect against this side who are currently flying high in Tier 1 of the Fife Football League, but with home advantage we were looking to take full advantage and progress into the fourth round.
The team were set up today in a way which the opposition would find it difficult to break us down.
The match started at a quick pace and Templehall had the majority of the opening chances and took advantage of this by taking a 2 goal lead early into the first half. We did respond extremely well though as Coden Gorrie capitalised on a through ball and raced past the Templehall defence before slotting home to give us a goal back.
This seemed to give the boys a confidence boost and also rocking Templehall as we found our feet in the match.
We gaining momentum fast, and equalised shortly before half time through an outstanding top corner screamer from striker Eze. Just as well the nets were secured down well! The Templehall goalkeeper was left with no chance as the ball flew past him into the top corner.
Half time and the team were positive. I could see that they now knew they had nothing to fear and the game was there for the taking.
Second half and end to end action once again. Both teams had a string of chances to no avail. Mid-way through the second half we were awarded a penalty which captain JJ Lamond coolly slotted home to bring wild scenes by both players and supporters at South Road 2.
Templehall frantically looking for the equaliser now and our defence were up against constant pressure but were holding out well. Templhall's persistence eventually paid off though and they slotted home an equaliser with around 5 minutes to play.
It was anyone's game now and the game really opened up. More chances for both teams yet again, with the best chance falling to Templehall forward who connected well and with the ball heading for the top corner Layton Smith appeared from nowhere to somehow tip the ball over the bar. What a save!
The final whistle was blown and straight to penalties. Unfortunately luck did not fall our way and Templehall secured their place on the next round with a 4-3 victory on penalties.
Absolutely tremendous effort from every player today and one of my personaL favourite performances. The boys battled for every ball and their commitment today was first class.
Extremely proud of them all today. Penalties is a cruel way to be knocked out of cup competitions but the team should be full of confidence in the coming weeks on the back of a tremendous performance.
Well done to all the team.
