Away league match
On our travels once more, this time just up the A90 and a left hand turn to face Kirriemuir Thistle on a match we had high hopes for.
We were welcomed by an absolute tattie field of a pitch at Martin Park, however no choice but to just crack on and try and get back down the road with all 3 points regardless of the mud bath.
First half was up there with one of our worst half's of football. Whole team were all over the place, very little energy levels, second to every ball and total lack of communication between the team seen us go in at half time 2-0 down. We are usually encouraging during half time team talks but today's first half performance called for something a bit sterner and the lads were told in no uncertain terms that they were letting themselves down by not playing to their usual high standards and that it would be such a disappointment to go through the entire match like this. The coaches asked them to reset and go out into the second half with a fresh approach, as the next goal in the game would be crucial to the end result.
Great response second half - so much better. Josh McCullough steadied the ship in midfield and we were starting to win first and second balls, work together as a team and battled for everything. Looked like a different team. Almost straight away we got a goal back when Maison King finished well. The lads grabbed the ball and put it back on the centre spot as they looked to go again. Not long after this Eze was on target to put the game level. 2-2. Looked like we had turned a corner and the momentum would surely see us win this game. Against the run of play Kirriemuir went in front again when they finished off a good move to go 3-2 up. The game was in the balance and anything could happen at this point but our lads looked more determined and our pressure eventually paid off when Rhys Wighton was on the scoresheet to put the game level once again.
Five minutes to go and both sides saw chances come and go. Both ourselves and Kirriemuir hitting the woodwork on a number of occasions, an absolute mad game of football to be honest but it all swung our way with two minutes to go when the ball fell to Maison King in the Kirriemuir box. Maison took his time, remained calm and slotted the ball into the back of the net to jubilant celebrations from players and supporters on the sidelines.
We held out to win the game 4-3, being honest absolutely no idea how we got through that one, but credit to the team who got there in the end, as they so often do but really hoping we can put better first half performances in against teams we expect to be beating to make the second half's a bit more relaxed and to settle the coaches and supporters nerves, but that's football I suppose!
Another 3 points on the board for the team who continue their impressive league campaign in tier 2. Well done lads!
