Away league match

Today the lads seemed very confident. Off the back of a win away against unbeaten Leyland they all knew what was possible. A couple of changes due to unavailability. I reminded the lads pre match about the grit desire and determination showed in the previous match and that nothing less would be acceptable today, after a win like that its important to follow up against todays opponents. Having continued to work hard at training I felt positive going into the game.

The game got under way and it was almost a stroll . The 3 defenders sprayed the ball around really well finding pockets of space for the wide men whilst also playing into the numbers 10s feet for them to turn defence into attack. The LCB and RCB even managed to carry the ball out on a number of occasions which led to the first goal. Jack Hurst (RCB) drew the wing back out allowing space for Stephen Harkin (RM) to get in behind. When the ball was played into Ste he already had his eyes on Gareth Jones movement, a great cross was met with a solid header to make it 1-0 after 5 minutes of play. These fazes of play continued, Dalton creating chance after chance. A neat ball played through the lines again from Jack Hurst set Gareth Jones on his way, rounding 2 defenders and calmly slotting home for 2-0. Just before half time a short goal kick drew the opposition out allowing a big gap for Joe Fidler, he shrugged off his opponent to go clean through and make it 3-0 at the break. A very convincing first half which Dalton had totally dominated. Half time we spoke about starting positions and game management. It was great to hear a player mention the scenarios we’ve done at training and how to now manage the second half.

The home team got the wind in their sails in the second half and applied a lot of pressure. Good shape, organisation and commitment helped the lads see the pressure out until a long ball caught our defence out and a misjudged header fell to the Tempest forward to get a consolation goal. After this Dalton could easily have extended their lead on a number of occasions if not for poor decision making. A great result and another 3 points

3 Points Stephen Harkin
