Home cup match

Despite some pre-match nerves, the ladies came out of hibernation to blow away the cobwebs with a strong 9-0 win over a young Carlisle United Development side in today's County Cup quarter final. With work and other commitments, both sides only had 11 players available and we were delighted to welcome back into the fold, keeper Nicola Morning and forward Pip Atkinson who haven't played for 3 and 2 years respectively. Another welcome sight was striker Emma Sisson, who hasn't kicked a ball since damaging her knee ligament in last years CFA Women's League Cup final.

The ladies took the game to Carlisle from the off with several shots just over, then Emma Sisson opened the scoring on 5 minutes with a typical solo finish after running on to a through ball from Darcy Cannon. Newlaithes increased the lead on 24 minutes when Pip Atkinson clipped in at the near post from a Paige Williams long throw from the right. Two minutes later and it was 3-0 when some fine team passing from back to front enabled Pip Atkinson to set up Emma Sisson to grab her second from close range after good work from Emily Green. Another 2 minutes and it was 4-0 when Darcy Cannon forced home another Paige Williams long throw from close range. On 35 minutes the roles were reversed when Paige Williams tapped in a Darcy Cannon corner from the right at the far post then on 44 minutes, Emma Sisson slid the ball through for Pip Atkinson to run clear of her marker to smash the ball home for her second. 6-0 at half time.

The second half continued in a similar vein with the visitors restricted to the occasional counter attack but Newlaithes continued to press. Both teams began to tire as the game went on but Newlaithes extended the lead on 56 minutes when Emma Sisson completed her hat-trick by smashing the ball home after a deft flick by Pip Atkinson. On 59 minutes, Abbie Hooper ran onto another Atkinson through ball to finish just inside the left hand upright, then on 75 minutes, Jade Williams took the ball out of defence and into the opposition half before lifting the ball to Emma Sisson to fire in a shot. The keeper parried and Sisson followed up well to finish from close range and complete the scoring.

Hats off to both teams, this was the first game in over 6 months and they gave their all over the full 90 minutes. There will be some stiff legs tomorrow!!!
