Westdyce 0 - 4 Cowie Thistle
Cowie began their defence of the AFC Trophy with a very comfortable win over Westdyce.
With numerous players away Cowie were forced into quite a few changes and this looked to affect the team as they were slow to start, however once IRV scored after 10 minutes from close range in a goalmouth scramble, the Westdyce heads seemed to go down and it was all Cowie from then on.
IRV added a second 5 minutes later heading home from a Lovick flick on and it was soon 3-0 after that when McDONALD scored from a Buchanan cross.
Irv had the chance to make it 4-0 after half an hour when his shot was stopped on the line by a Westdyce defender who was at full stretch to handle the ball, a terrific save, however the ref decided that it wasn’t a red card because....well who knows!
With regular penalty taker Ronan wanting to take the penalty, Irv used his senior authority to take the kick himself for his hat trick and produced a terrible penalty that the keeper saved easily.
Cowie did make it 4-0 2 minutes after half time when a low MacDonald cross/shot was slid home at the back post by IRV for his hat trick.
The game completely died out after this, with few chances at either end, there was however a treat for the travelling Cowie faithful as cult hero Matty Bolton produced a 10 minute cameo which included one of his trademark runs down the wing!
Job done for Cowie today, not the best of performances but didn’t need to be, another clean sheet and through to the next round!
