St Laurence 2 - 3 Cowie Thistle
Cowie moved to 2nd in the league after coming back from Laurencekirk with all 3 points after a deserved victory over St Laurence.
Having gone behind early the last time the teams played it was vital Cowie started well and found themselves 2-0 up within 15 minutes when first LOVICK scored from close range and then when a cross from Cran was completely missed by Lovick from 5 yards, a St Laurence player showed him how it’s done by following up and lashing the ball home for a superb OG.
St Laurence only had one real chance in the first half when they hit the post but Cowie should’ve added to the scoreline before half time but some more poor finishing kept the score at 2-0
Into the 2nd half and St Laurence came back into the game but the Cowie defence was withstanding the pressure until 20 minutes from the end when from a free kick, probably the 500th free kick the ref had awarded in the game, St Laurence scored with a header from inside the box.
Cowie were now on the back foot but didn’t look likely to concede another as the defence and midfield held firm and were looking dangerous on the break and missed a couple of good chances from corners and then Irv hit the post with a free kick, but with 3 minutes to go, Irv got to the touchline and cut it back for SMITHY to calmly side foot home and send the away support wild!
St Laurence got a late consolation in the 96th minute when a very very soft penalty was awarded against Watson and the striker scored to make it 3-2 but the whistle blew immediately after Cowie kicked off for full time.
Another great 3 points today as all 16 lads involved battled hard in a game made difficult for both sides by the constant sound of a whistle blowing!
