Cowie Thistle 1 - 3 Shortlees
Cowie exited the Scottish Cup today as they put in a spirited performance against previous winners Shortlees today.
In front of a bumper crowd at Jim Glennie Park, Cowie didn’t settle and it was Shortlees who started the game brighter and deservedly took the lead in the 20th minute when a corner was headed home by the big Shortlees defender.
From there Cowie came into the game more and tried to play some football instead of long balls and had a couple of half chances to equalise but couldn’t take them, finishing the half though the stronger team.
The next goal was crucial and despite Cowie starting the 2nd half strongly, Shortlees broke away in the 55th minute from a Cowie corner and the No.11 ran from the halfway line and finished well into the bottom corner.
Still reeling from that goal, Cowie conceded a 3rd in the 65th minute when a needless free kick was given away 30 yards from goal and the Shortlees midfielder curled it home for 3-0.
Credit to Cowie though as they went straight up the park and got a goal back when BUCK cut inside and finished superbly low from outside the box to make it 3-1.
It was mostly Cowie from here onwards with a couple more half chances, but Shortless always looked comfortable in defence, winning everything in the air and restricting the Cowie attack to hopeful balls into the box, they were even reduced to 10 men with 10 minutes to go but Cowie couldn’t take advantage.
The cup run comes to an end, it’s been an unbelievable journey with some highs that probably won’t be matched, but the whole squad should hold their heads high for reaching this stage and the performance they put in, just disappointing to lose the goals in the manner we did today.
Finally a thank you to all those came down today, with well over 200 in attendance it was great to see the local support for amateur football!
