Cowie Thistle 2 - 4 Pennies AFC
Cowie exited the Scottish Cup today but can count themselves unlucky to have not at least got a draw out of the game.
Knowing it was the best opposition the team had faced this season, Cowie yet again got off to a fantastic start when Nicoll lobbed the keeper after only 40 seconds for 1-0.
Cowie then had a fantastic chance through Irv on 10 minutes to double the lead but the top scorer failed to hit the target from 6 yards out following a Buchanan cross.
Cowie continued to push forward at every opportunity and it was 2-0 after half an hour when the Pennies keeper gave away a penalty after catching the ball from a cross he flicked out at Ronan Masson and the ref gave a penalty. Ronan stepped up himself and confidently made it 2-0.
A couple more chances came before half time but couldn’t be converted but it was one of the best 45 minutes the team had put in.
Cowie knew Pennies would come right back at them at the start of the second half and so it turned out when they got one back after 47 minutes when the winger scored low into the bottom corner. This put Cowie on the back foot as they struggled to get forward and to Pennies credit they began to control the game, showing why they reached the last 16 last year and scored 3 more after 60, 70 and 80 minutes to run out winners.
A lesson for the side in the 2nd half but the 1st half showed that this team can compete with anyone, and if the chances were taken it could’ve been a different story.
