Cowie Thistle 3-2 Newtonhill
Cowie progressed into the next round of the Association Trophy this afternoon, but made it difficult for themselves toward the end of this game.
It could be argued it was a “tale of two halves” today. In the first half Cowie were cruising and were 2-0 up with two quick fire goals in the 15th and 17th minute. Ghandi was quick to latch onto a defensive error to put Cowie 1 up and McDonald scored with a powerful header into the top corner from a great Cran cross.
Newtonhill rarely really threatened but scored from a free kick on the edge of the box, then we went 3-1 up when McDonald grabbed his second from a Smith free kick, when he nudged home with his crotch, with 10 mins remaining in the half.
Into the second half and a jinking run from Smithy into the box resulted in a penalty and with the chance to go 4-1 up Mcdonald missed and the game changed.
Newtonhill got a second from a long ball over the top and for the remaining 30 mins Cowie struggled and Newtonhill came more into the game but couldn’t grab an equaliser.
Overall we’re happy to be into the next round but the second half performance will have to be improved on if the challenge at the top of the table is to be maintained.
