Cowie Thistle 2 - 4 Echt

Cowie exited the Association Trophy at the 2nd round stage with a disappointing performance against Echt today.

With all the rain in the last few days the pitch was in a better than expected condition and both teams were looking to pass the ball about in the opening stages and Cowie took the lead after 25 minutes when a short corner between Gandhi and Smithy resulted in a cross which IRV headed home at back post.

Cowie went looking for a second and had chances when first Gandhi and then Irv shot narrowly wide but there was no further scoring before half time.

Not long into the 2nd half Cowie had a great chance to make it 2-0 but after a great team move Gandhi couldn’t apply the finish.

Echt then equalised in the 65th minute when poor clearances at the edge of the box allowed the ball to fall to an Echt player who finished into the bottom corner.

Unbelievably Cowie found themselves 2-1 down a minute later when on the attack Cowie lost the ball and 1 Echt player ran unchallenged through 3 Cowie players and round keeper Forbes to slot home.

Cowie made the 4 available subs they had to try get back into the game and it paid off with 5 minutes to go when Lovick beat the keeper to a high ball and MUZZY expertly finished from a yard.

With extra time looking likely Cowie then conceded two goals in injury time with yet again more poor defending. Goals that really shouldn’t of been conceded.

Another lesson to be learned and the first time this young team have lost 3 on the bounce, it wasn’t the worst performance of the season by a long way but if the team continues to lose soft goals like they have the last 3 games and not take clear cut chances then it’ll be a long hard season.
