Juniors Smash Seven!
No torrential rain today, unlike the last time these teams met, instead a lovely sunny morning greeted the teams. No Mya, Sadie, Kasey or Faye for this one but a healthy squad of fourteen players for a pleasant change with Holly making her JPL debut for the team.
From the first whistle the team were at it, pinning the visitors back with controlled possession. The first real opening fell to Emilie, her shot drifting wide of the target but the pressure was building and the first goal was only another minute away, Megan benefitting from Layla’s block tackle and stroking the ball past the Sussex goalkeeper (1-0). A good save to deny Bobbi only temporarily stopped the floodgates and one of many first half corners led to the second goal, Layla more determined when meeting Bobbi’s delivery and heading accurately past a stranded goalkeeper (2-0). A superb third goal 20 mins in gave Megan her second, brilliant one touch play between her and Summer creating the space for Megan to guide the ball goal-wards and into the bottom corner (3-0). Substitutions after the mini break meant for the introduction of Lauren, Carly and debutant Holly. Summer was having a real influence on the teams’ attacking play and it was more good work from her that freed Holly to open her account, holding off her defender before slotting under the goalkeeper (4-0). Before the half time break a penalty did reduce the deficit, a rare raid into the home penalty area ended by Eva and a spot kick well dispatched (4-1).
HT 4-1
Another strong start to the second half by the girls with Megan seeing her free kick well saved. She was not to be denied though, a defence splitting pass from Abbie and Megan calmly rounding the goalkeeper and claiming a deserved hat-trick goal (5-1). Millie produced a smart save before
Holly went close again, hitting the crossbar prior to firing over after good play from Bobbi. Another rare raid from Sussex was ended by more strong goalkeeping, Millie bravely diving at the feet of the onrushing forward before Brooke decided to make her presence felt, first by jumping on a loose ball in the area and finding the far corner of the goal (6-1) and then finishing clinically from Megan’s assist (7-1).
Summary: A good performance from the team today, asking a lot of questions of a Sussex team that struggled to contain a Juniors’ team that attacked from all angles.
As all good performances this was built on strong foundations, Millie commanding between the sticks, combinations of Eva, Lauren, Annabel and Lila forming the rearguard either side of Layla who was a force at both ends of the pitch. The midfield was bossed by a three of Abbie, Summer and Emilie, the wide play was effective, Bobbi and Holly continually turning an overworked defence and Carly supporting Meg and Brooke who reaped the rewards up front.
A thoroughly deserved win, well done!
