Gritty Point Earned!
Juniors’ first outing of the year was against a very strong Pompey team that made for a difficult day out last time they met. A lot had happened since the last match played with Sadie and Kacey leaving. No Bobbi or Faye available, just a very determined group of 13. That was until Eva’s positive Covid test an hour before ko!… A determined group of 12 were about to show a slightly different side to themselves.
The first 10 minutes saw a strong and quick Pompey side on the front foot, the girls stood firm. The game levelled out into a good contest and the girls were showing that bit of steely determination, if one was pushed…expect to be pushed back! Pompey created chances but the team coped with them, Millie especially confident between the sticks. Megan’s introduction onto the field of play 30 minutes in saw her hit the side netting of the goal with her first touch in the best chance of the match in the first half. She would have more of a say later in the match!
HT 0-0
The second period was to be played out in similar fashion, two determined teams locking horns and clear cut chances at a premium. The midfield battle was not for the faint hearted, Summer, Abbie and Brooke all taking knocks but picking themselves up and getting on with it. The team had coped with everything thrown at them but with 10 minutes remaining on the clock came a body blow. A quick throw in giving time and space for a decisive finish (0-1). Pompey tails were up, the team had to dig in to stay in the game, a very strong run looked like it would inflict more damage but Layla pressured and Millie saved. The girls deserved something today, all the team were showing desire, the goal did not effect morale and although time ticked beyond 80 minutes and into injury time they still tried to press forwards against a stubborn defence. With the final whistle imminent Layla played a telling ball over heads that gave Meg a slight chance, she showed incredible desire to reach the ball just ahead of goalkeeper and centre half and then to hook the ball goalwards and into the net! The final whistle followed and they had the point they fully deserved!
FT 1-1
Summary:
A determined effort from the girls today giving them a deserved share of the spoils. Millie, excellent with her handling, an incredible defensive effort with Lauren solid in her challenges, Lila as determined as always and Layla leading from the back. Special mention to Mya who shone in her first match of the season after injury. Summer, asked to play slightly deeper in an attempt to break up play which of course was carried out, Emilie, Brooke, Abbie, Annabel and Carly all playing their part in trying to drive the team forwards and Megan who worked tirelessly up front.
A real competitive performance from the team today, well done all!
