Lightning Start Strikes City!
City Ladies 1.
Juniors 5.
Juniors’ travelled to Portsmouth looking for a first win on their travels. No Mya, Sadie, Bobbi, Millie or Holly for the game, a squad of 13 still travelled. After navigating several car parks and height barriers the team were good to go.
The pre-match talk was of a good start, what they produced was an incredibly good start! Inside the first minute and the first goal was on the score sheet, Megan benefitting from Brooke’s assist (1-0). A scrappy 10 minutes followed, it was clear that the hosts were out to disrupt with their physicality and this affected the early flow. The team did begin to find their stride again with attacks coming from deep, quick combinations from back to front and plenty of chances created. Lauren and Emilie had shots saved, the team smelt blood and from good link up play and Emilie’s cheeky nutmeg, it was left for Megan to bag her second with a neat finish (2-0). The team were in control of matters and in truth could have scored several more goals, they would have to settle for one more before the break however, Brooke clinical at the end of another slick move involving Faye, Summer and Carly (3-0).
HT 3-0
A similar second half was to follow, a midfield screen and committed defending not letting their opponents anywhere near their goal for the majority of the period. Another early goal and yet another hat-trick for Megan, all her own work forcing turnover of possession and squeezing the ball home (4-0). The next 15 minutes went something like….Carly saved, Brooke saved, Carly wide, Megan saved, Megan’s cut back and an unfortunate own goal (5-0). It would have been a boost for the girls to keep the clean sheet they had almost earned but they seemed determined not to, after a half of dominating, a bit of lapse play gave away a corner that almost produced an own goal, the ball bouncing along the crossbar via Layla’s boot. The next resulting corner and City Ladies had their conselation goal from a point blank header.
Summary: a very dominant performance in what could have been a testing game. The girls’ coped well with a physical side and imposed themselves well on their opponents. It was not faultless but it was performance full of endeavour, hard work and in patches some lovely creative play.
