Fluke Tough To Take!

Bitton 3

Juniors 2.

A squad of 12 travelled to Bristol. The team felt a bit hard done by having to settle for a point in their last meeting and were looking to better that this time round. The venue, a sloping, heavy pitch was too prove unhelpful to the cause.

Playing up the slope in the first half proved a struggle, probably more to do with the playing surface, passes were not finding their targets making for a messy looking game. It took a superb point blank save from Millie to keep the teams level before the girls took the lead against the run of play, Brooke pressurising a goalkeeping mistake, composing herself and firing the team ahead (0-1). Pressure from the hosts had produced plenty of corner kicks, from one of these, as in previous weeks, an unchallenged Bitton forward scored to level the scores. The girls did show more attacking intent as the half drew to a close and twice went close but could not find the goal.

HT 1-1.

Even with facing down the slope in the second period, the girls still struggled with passing combinations, the heavy pitch taking its toll. A lot of the home side’s potential attacks had come down Juniors’ left hand side hand side which would prove the downfall. With the central defence drawn across, space was left for an easy run into space and finish (2-1). Juniors’ battled back but found it difficult to break a physically strong defensive line, it was an over physical challenge that gave the team a free kick within range. Megan stepped up and somehow found the bottom left hand corner for the equaliser (2-2). The home team, obviously used to the environment had coped better with a pitch that would have tested the best of any mens football team but it was proving tough for the travelling side. They had to finish the last 10 minutes without Summer, her tank finally empty,, struggling with a virus but not willing to let the team down. The team had battled, irrelevant of the pitch and they did not deserve the fluke goal in the final two minutes, a cross from the flank flying into the far corner of the goal (3-2).

FT 3-2.

Summary:

Generally second to the ball today. Players returning from injury, hindered by illness and knocks all took its toll on a pitch that would prove difficult for any visiting team, a massive advantage for the home side. Heads did not drop, the girls battled and did not deserve to lose the game. Special mention to Lila’s drive, determination and enthusiasm today, one to have In the trenches with you.

Don’t be too down-heartened girls, back on level ground next week with what should be a cracker!
