vs Andover New Street
Home league match
Andover were the visitors to Cobham, they came complete with Ukrainian flags and both teams impeccably observed a minutes silence prior to kick off in memory of similar aged people caught up in a conflict that keeps football firmly in perspective. The home team were without Summer, Lucy, Faye, Bobbi and Brooke for what always proves a competitive encounter.
Another tight opening affair with the visitors asking most of the early questions. The team stayed disciplined and weathered that early pressure. Although more in the game the longer the half progressed, the girls found it difficult to break the lines and to create goal scoring chances. The team defended well and limited New Street also, that was until they found themselves clear in the six yard box for what seemed a certain goal, Millie somehow keeping the scores level with a stunning triple save. As in the previous week, minutes short of the half time whistle, the visitors took the lead with an easy finish after forcing a defensive mix up (0-1).
HT 0-1
The second period saw a similarly competitive game, although not the most fluent of matches in football terms, no inch was given easily. Failure to close down in midfield gave Andovers’ aggressive midfielder a strike at goal, Millie got two hands on but was unable to keep the ball out of her goal (0-2). The team pushed further forwards and began having more of a day in the final third. Abbie set her sights, pulling her shot wide of the target before the team thought they had found a way back, Megan finishing from Abbie’s through ball….that was until the visiting lines-person raised his flag suggesting a fingernail was offside (watching far too much match of the day) and the goal was ruled out. Megan was soon through on goal again but stumbled at the crucial moment and Eva’s low attempt was well saved when the team were on top. It was not to be, a battling performance but with no rewards.
FT 0-2.
Summary: A tough match in which the girls showed fight and character. With a full compliment of players available the result would probably have been different but this was not the fault of the eleven that took to the field today. All the girls ‘put in a shift’ although special mention must go to Emilie and Lila, them two will sleep well tonight!
