Short On Manpower.....But Not Heart!
A long trip to Gosport to play a new opponent in Pompey Girls. Unfortunately, due to injury, illness and commitments only 10 girls travelled. Out went Summer, Brooke, Carly, Annabel and Charlotte, although Charlotte still travelled to cheer the girls on!
For a change it was not Junioirs’ with the fast start but their hosts, a defensive mistake pounced on and a good finish (1-0). Pompey hit their stride and were finding big spaces to run into with the numerical advantage and to be fair the speed of their play caused all sorts of problems for the girls’. The team struggled to contain and further goals followed in the first period...a lot of them! (2-0) (3-0) (4-0) (5-0). The half time whistle thankfully blew but left the group a bit shell shocked, frustrated and also upset. Irrelevant of circumstances they had allowed a good team to over-power them....a thought provoking 10 minute break followed!
HT 5-0
The first half was done, they could not change that now, only what was ahead of them. A much better start to the second half, testing the goalkeeper with a couple of early efforts prior to another Pompey goal (6-0). Pompey had withdrawn a player to equal the numbers up and the game began a swing in momentum, after another effort from the hosts had been brilliantly saved by Millie the girls’ switched things up to the next level. A counter attack led by Eva saw Meg round the GK and slot home (6-1). All Megan’s own doing next, winning the ball and firing her second (6-2). It was now Pompey that were struggling to contain and if a third goal had come a bit earlier who knows what the team could have achieved but Meg hit a post and Bobbi saw her drive well saved. The girls’ still pushed, any signs of hesisitancy had long gone and from Kaitlyn’s astute pass, Megan bagged her hat trick goal with yet another slick finish (6-3). Kaitlyn’s well taken shot over the GK (6-4) prompted the final whistle, ending a fantastic half of football from the girls.
Summery: a first half in which the girls’ were simply over-powered, Pompey having not only the advantage in numbers but the luxury of 3 subs to rotate. A six goal deficit was too much to overturn although a team of Millie, Eva, Mya, Faye, Abi, Bobbi, Lauren, Sophie, Meg and Kaitlyn gave it a right good go!
FT: 6-4.
POM: Megan (lead the fightback)
