Juniors’ Up And Running At Bridgwater!
A first run out in the JPL for the team, a reduced squad of 13 girls travelling due to injury and illness.
A great start by the hosts, on the front foot from the whistle was met by a defensive rearguard that was stretched before they got a foothold in the game. Wave after wave of early attacks was thwarted by a dogged defensive unit backed up by Millie in goal. A combination of these players, the goalpost twice and the crossbar somehow keeping the scores level through the first 20 minutes. Unfortunately for Juniors’, the referee did not realise the game should have been split into 20 minute periods, the clock ticked on past 30 minutes giving no time to regroup, although the game evened out into more of an even contest. Juniors’ began to show their hand in the game, breaking up play and starting to create themselves, Megan going closest, her strike well saved by the home goalkeeper. Over the first half, Juniors’ had weathered the early onslaught, dug in and more than held their own towards the end of the period but on balance Bridgwater probably deserved the reward of the goal they scored, Millie saving a first effort but the ball falling kindly to Izzy of the home team to guide the ball into the open goal (1-0).
HT 1-0
Juniors’ had began slowly in the first half, mainly due to a committed opponent but the start of the second period saw the team stamp their own authority on the game. An early raid saw Emily shoot narrowly wide and a build up of pressure led to a well taken equaliser, Summer cleverly chipping the defensive line and goalkeeper into the net after being first to a loose ball (1-1). The away team were now having their best spell in the match and after Megan and Emily had again gone close it was Juniors’ turn to rattle the post, Megan’s effort rebounding across the goal but out of the reach of team-mates. Not for the first time in footballing history, the team conceded when having their best spell, Bridgwater’s Lemoni finishing well after finding space inside the box. A real test of character for the away team now, a test they more than took on board. With 5 minutes remaining, Megan latched onto Lila’s through ball and struck a low drive that the home goalkeeper got a hand to but could not stop from nestling into the bottom corner of the goal (2-2).
With the final whistle looming a final raid from the away team saw the defensive line breached again, although the home goalkeeper comfortably saved Sadie’s low drive.
FT 2-2
Summary:
A well contested match, the home team having the better of the earlier exchanges and earning a deserved half time lead. Not to be phased, Juniors’ made their presence felt in the second half and showed battling qualities that saw them twice bounce back from behind.
A deserved point in the first JPL outing for the girls’ against a talented Bridgwater team.
