A totally different match from when these two teams met last time out! On that day, at the same venue, Juniors’ scored 7 goals, totally outplaying their opponents.
Today it was Southampton’s day, out of the blocks quickly making for a tough 35mins for the team. The only goal of the half coming through the right hand channel, a strong finish that Millie could do nothing about (1-0). The girls worked hard to try and get things going but it wasn’t there today, this was mainly down to a gritty Southampton team that worked hard to stop the team from getting their football going.
HT 1-0.
In football terms, the second half was chalk and cheese to the first with Juniors’ playing most of the second half in their opponents half. Although still not playing their best football the girls pressed for an equaliser. 15mins into the half a real blow for the team, with a very rare attack Saints scored with their only shot on goal in the half, must say, it was a very good shot into the top corner of the goal (2-0). There was still plenty of time left in the game and if Charlotte’s strike had gone in rather than hitting the inside of the post things could have been very interesting. Other half chances came and went but the girls couldn’t force themselves back into the game.
Amazingly, today was the first ever time this team had not scored in a match. The team will learn a lot from the match today, take it on the chin and improve because of it.
Congratulations to Southampton, it was their day today....look forward to the next one!
