vs Gretton Reserves

Away cup match

Pegasus Reserves started the game with plenty of pace and power and had a lot of early enjoyment down the right hand flank. The Gretton team struggled to cope with this from minute one. In the 15th minute, Scott Porch played a long ball down the field which found Thomo who made no mistake and lobbed the keeper from 25 yards. A minute later, Szabi powered down the right flank and cut inside the box but was fouled by the Gretton full back which seen Pegasus awarded a penalty. Thomo stepped up and struck the ball well, but the Gretton keeper made a terrific save to keep the score 1-0. The dominance continued for Pegasus, but very few clear cut chances were being created. HT 1-0. Second Half was a total change of identity as Gretton began piling on the pressure and were more hungry in every area of the pitch. They got their reward in the 55th minute when their player glided through a number of Pegasus bodies and unleashed a low hard strike which bounced over Jonny to make it 1-1. The pressure continued and in the 65th minute, a long range strike produced a fantastic save from Jonny, tipping the ball onto the bar, but the Gretton player reacted quicker and tapped the ball into an empty net to make it 1-2. The changes were then made for Pegasus and it became a do or die situation. After a sluggish second half performance, the ball was hoofed into the Gretton penalty area and after a little scramble, Thomo found a yard of space and rolled the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-2 in the 90th minute. 5 minutes of injury time was displayed by the 4th official and Pegasus found a lot of momentum from the equalizing strike. The pressure was back on Gretton and they were pinned back into their own half. The deciding goal came in the 94th minute when Thomo darted across the right hand side of the penalty area and sent a pass across goal to Andy Silley who had made a clever run there to slide in and place the ball into the empty net. Full time 3-2.

A great cup game for the neutrals. Some great football diaplayed and both teams showed a great deal of desire to win the match. Thankfully it was Pegasus who had the extra bit of energy in the tank to fight until the last minute. Some great individual performances but all in all the superb team spirit of Pegasus and their never say die attitude was the difference. Our top scorer Thomo stepped up with 2 goals and an assist and was very close to getting Man of the Match, but this was awarded to Gareth McBlain. A great midfield performance. Passed the ball well, intercepted the ball, won a lot of important headers but the main reason was for his man marking of the Gretton captain who is usually the play maker of the side. Well deserved.

Next up we play Gretton on Saturday in a massive league match ... but for now we can celebrate being League Cup Champions.
