vs Codsall Station

Away cup match

This afternoon's away fixture against Codsall Station ended in a convincing 6-1 victory for Claregate.

Claregate were creating plenty of early chances to score with opportunities for winger Jay Rumbold and striker Rodney "Trotter" Williams but it was the hosts that took the lead against the run of play. A 12th minute goal with a sublime finish into the top corner from outside the area nudged Codsall ahead.

Claregate battled back though and in the 21st minute a short corner from Jay Rumbold found debutant Mark Trow with time and space to deliver a cross to the far post for Kev Haughton to nod across the area leaving Dale Elliott with a simple header to score.

Claregate continued to pile on the pressure and went ahead in the 29th minute when Trotter threaded a ball through to Jay Rumbold who's shot was saved only for Kev Haughton to head in the rebound.

The 2nd half continued in much the same way and with a half time change seeing Andy Arnold on for Danny Rai.

Within a minute of kicking off the 2nd half Claregate went 3-1 ahead when Kev Haughton won the ball on the right, passed inside to Trotter who then returned to Kev with a defence splitting pass leaving Kev with just the keeper to beat with a drilled shot inside the near post.

In the 75th minute, Jon Wilson found Kev Haughton with a superb pass who beat the defence and then the keeper with a finish off the inside of the far post to complete his hat-trick.

Claregate added a 5th in the 87th minute when another short corner left Josh Hodson with space to deliver a cross that was met by a thumping header from Dale Elliott to add to his earlier goal.

In injury time, substitute Marc "Tommo" Thomas tricked his way from the left side, across the 18 yard box where the keeper brought him down and conceded a foul inside the area. Nathan Garratt stepped up to convert the resulting penalty in a fitting tribute to his performance after suffering family bereavement the week before.

MOTM today went to Kev Haughton for a determined performance capped with a hat-trick. Special mentions though for debutant Mark Trow, centre half partners Nathan Garratt and Dale Elliott along with winger Jay Rumbold for outstanding performances.

Other subs used were Tommo on for Trotter on 54 minutes and Josh Hodson on for injured keeper Lee Witherford on 76 minutes.
