Chemfica hosted West Denton at the Newburn Leisure Centre on 29th September 2024 with kick-off at 10:30 am. In a nail-biting contest, Chemfica emerged victorious with a final score of 3-2, managing to hold off a spirited fightback from their opponents.
Chemfica set up in a 4-5-1 formation, designed to provide a solid defensive base while allowing for quick transitions into attack. Christopher Beers took his place in goal, shielded by a back four comprising David Shotton on the right, Shaun Pearson and Jon Batty as central defenders, and Reegan Marchant on the left. The midfield consisted of Jake Newton on the right, Mpumi Nyembe and Josh Leonard in central roles, with Charlie Glasgow on the left, providing width and creativity. Ewan Botcherby led the line as the lone striker, tasked with holding up play and finishing off chances.
The substitutes available for Chemfica were Mark Tremaine, Joe Wilkinson, Mark Stobbart, Louis Edwards, and Liam Heenan, all poised to make an impact as the match unfolded.
The first half saw Chemfica take control early on, with Botcherby finding the net in the closing moments of the half. A well-executed corner from Shotton found Botcherby at close range, who expertly headed the ball past the West Denton goalkeeper, sending Chemfica into the break with a 1-0 lead.
The second half began brightly for Chemfica, with Reegan Marchant doubling their advantage just five minutes in. Marchant unleashed a stunning long-range strike with his left foot that left the West Denton defence scrambling, marking a confident start to the half.
However, the tide turned with a series of substitutions for Chemfica around the 62-minute mark, which aimed to refresh the squad tactically. Mark Tremaine replaced Shotton, Joe Wilkinson came on for Newton, and Mark Stobbart took over from Glasgow. Just a few minutes later, a yellow card was issued for unsporting behaviour, adding to the tension on the pitch.
West Denton began their comeback in the 67th minute, converting a penalty to make it 2-1. This was followed by a tap-in from an unmarked West Denton player, levelling the score at 2-2 in the 82nd minute and leaving Chemfica rattled.
In the dying moments of the match, with the clock ticking into stoppage time, Chemfica found a lifeline. Liam Heenan, who had replaced Botcherby just ten minutes earlier, scored a crucial goal. He capitalised on a precise short pass from Josh Leonard, finishing with his left foot from close range to seal the victory at 3-2 for Chemfica.
The match showcased the resilience of Chemfica as they overcame a late resurgence from West Denton, ultimately securing a vital three points in their league campaign.
