It wasn't meant to be as Cheam Rovers ultimately lose on penalties. With no football since Feb 27th, missing 5 of our regulars and against a team who finished 2nd in the league above - We sure held our own for 120 minutes, so a huge congratulations to all the lads!
After early pressure from Byfleet we were able to snatch the lead from our first corner with Sam heading in from close range, put on a plate from Si (Must. Resist. Calling. Him. Wizard...). Byfleet had their chances and we took a while to find our rhythm but we were able to keep the scoreline as it was, 1-0 HT.
10 minutes after the restart, Byfleet were able to snatch two quick goals. A simple tap in from 2 yards out along with a penalty after a lovely Sunday league ref blunder. A short while later we hit back with a penalty of our own, a very soft one at that - maybe the ref making up from his previous mistake? Sam was able to convert, 2-2.
Both teams were back and forth in what was a great game to be a part of, the 20 in attendance were off their feet! FT and now it meant another 30 minutes of extra time ??. We took the lead when, (I've got to, sorry) the MALTESE WIZARD delivered a beautiful free kick from no mans land, making it easy for Sam to finish for his hat trick!
Byfleet then struck back again... A snap shot from the edge of the box took a deflection en route to goal giving Dave no chance. 3-3 and penalties it was.
A huge credit to Si, Bill, Sam, Lee and Dan L who stepped up in the shootout! In the end we lost 4-3 on pens but every player should hold their heads high, a great game given the circumstances. UP THE ******* CHEAM!!!!! ??
