Sometimes you get one of those days when everything just goes right. In football you know it’s the case when you start making “take the piss” substitutions.
And so it was when Eti Albin took his place at centre forward after Jordy Gallienne had just notched his second of the afternoon that you just knew it was one of what Lou Reed called a “Perfect Day”.
The fact that Eti then pulled out a trick to beat a defender in the Police penalty box just put the lid on it.
Yet we went into the game wondering just what might happen. We had hit a dodgy patch - no goals for more than three hours, none in open play for nearly five, and with Police proving the epitome of inconsistency...
At half time, having played into the gale, we were a goal up. They’d missed a couple of chances, but Giorgio Venosa had capped a great team move to notch his first for the club and give us what proved to be a very valuable goal lead.
Second half was virtually one-way traffic. Bert was able to celebrate only our second clean sheet in the past 25 months as the goals rained in at the other end, leaving Joel “Malcolm Tucker” de Woolfson in the Police goal more angry than ever, much to John Fernandez’s delight.
First a back post scramble, with Jordy prominent, was forced home by Tinashe, then something very similar ended with Gavin Fitch being bundled to the ground. Peno! And Jordy sent Joel the wrong way from the spot.
Gavin got in on the goalscoring act with a fine 20-yard drive and Jordy finished the scoring after latching on to an inch-perfect assist from Adam Burroughs, looping the shot wide of poor Joel.
That was that and Eti’s cameo put the icing on the cake.
Our most comprehensive performance for some time - so comfortable that even Connor was subbed!
