Away cup match
Casuals and Pelham crashed out of the Bert Yabsley Cup after being thrashed 5-0 away from home to Bishops Stortford Wanderers FC. It was Pelhams first game back for over a month and they also welcomed back Dan Boyce, Charlie Daniels, Hakim Medfai and Adam Notly from injury, with all four players being out for the last 3-4 months, so a lot of players out of practice. The aim of the game was to get some minutes into people and come through the game unscathed. Pelham actually started the game the brighter of the two teams. They held on to the ball well and played some good stuff, but failed to create any real big clear cut chances. However after a dominant 20 minutes or so Pelham started to lose their foot hold on the game. Wanderers scored their first goal with their first real opportunity and initially went against the run of play to put themselves 1-0 up. However once the first goal went in the floodgates opened up and Pelham had a real bad 15-20 minute where they would find themselves 4-0 down by the end of it. It finished 4-0 at the half and it was a harsh scoreline on the away side who started the game so brightly. The second half started in similar fashion to the first as Pelham dominated the play and possession. However once again their final ball in the last third was quite clinical enough and they couldn't really create or carve out any real big opportunity. Again after 20 minutes or so of good play at the start of the half, Pelham started to drop off and the game opened up. Wanderers managed to add a fifth goal once they got into the second half and that's how the game finished. A harsh scoreline considering how well Pelham started both halves but unfortunately it just wasn't good enough from Pelham and well below their usual set standards. However it was just to be taken as a first game back as no matter the result Pelham would still be in a cup, and with Manuden FC waiting in the next round of the Yabsley, maybe it wasn't such a bad idea going into the Charity Salver instead. Not too many memorable performances but today's man of the match goes to Mark Hainsby, who had a fairly solid game and didn't do too much wrong in anything he done. First game under everyones belt and now we move on. Next week is a game that really matters against Hockerill Tens in the league cup as it is a cup we are wanting to win!!
