Castlecroft Rangers 4-2 Sutton Select
Captain and talisman Blake Ansell delivered another match-winning performance as his brace fired Division 5 Castlecroft Rangers to a cup upset against Division 3 Sutton Select at a sun-drenched Codsall.
Crofters have hit four in successive matches after their opening day defeat to Handsworth. Crofters’ manager, Max Woodhouse, included Ashley Law, Stuart Wright and Josh Gennard in three changes from the previous weeks’ demolition of Silhill D.
In truth, despite being two divisions below, the Crofters were always in control of this Intermediate Cup clash. They did, however, suffer an early setback as Sutton Select took the lead. A long ball deceived the Crofters’ defence to allow the Sutton Select striker to nonchalantly chip Max Woodhouse. Crofters’ deservedly equalised through Alex Wilson who calmly finished for his second goal in as many matches. The recovery from the early setback was complete when the hosts took the lead with a brilliantly worked goal. Stuart Wright’s excellent delivery was guided into the far corner by the head of veteran Gareth Prosser. Spectators could have been forgiven for believing that would be goal of the game but the Crofters’ third was worthy competition for it. Collins’ accurate ball in-field was exquisitely passed first time by Gareth Prosser to Blake Ansell. The Crofters’ captain still had a lot to do but finished fantastically into the far corner.
The hosts were possibly guilty of being sloppy early in the second half but the game appeared to be over as a contest when the Crofters’ got their fourth of the afternoon as Blake Ansell helped himself to his fifth goal in the last two games. He brilliantly curled a free-kick over the wall leaving the Sutton Select keeper sprawling with no chance. The visitors did pull one back from the second phase of play following a corner but the Crofters’ utilised their squad bringing on the exuberance and enthusiasm of Jones, Sellick and Griffith to ensure a safe passage into the next round.
