<p>Cardinal Newman picked up their first win of the pre-season as a return to Mersey Road ended in the mauling of league rivals Liobians. Right from the off Newman looked hungry, displaying both cunning and composure in equal measure all across the pitch. A strong back line defended well, and ably assisted the midfield in building up smooth passages of play. Following his brace on Saturday, Lee Atkinson continued where he left off, this time going one better and plundering a brilliant first half hat-trick. Sam Buckley also slotted home to make it 4-1 at half-time, then added a second and third via the penalty spot in the second half as Newman ran riot. Chris Magill marked his return by heading home from a delicious Tom Mullin corner kick.
<p>The signs are that this team, brimming with lively new summer signings, is really beginning to gel and build confidence. This wasn't a dreadful Liobians team, and their three goals proved that they could be dangerous at times. But Newman's composure, creativity and finishing were far superior to anything the men in green could muster.
<p>"Well played boys, fitness getting better. A few more games and we'll improve a lot" - Sam Buckley
<p>"Looked deadly today lads every time with the ball" - Shaun Williams
