Match Report - HERNE BAY - 15 Aug 2022

Game against Herne Bay 15th Auugust

This was a league game held at Bay Point where Herne Bay play their games. It would be fair to say that this is not a favourite ground of ours, a poor and over-wide pitch, with in-play cage walls and oversized goals. You tend to feel that the other team has a couple of goal head start.

The squad consisted of Jan in goal, Peter, Dave E and John in defence and Mark, Geoff and Andy operating a three man midfield trying to get forward when they could. Cedric and Simon made up the squad. It seems a defensive tactic, but it did mean that that the shots HB took were generally from distance and Jan was largely able to cope. Two down at half-time against the strongest team in the League was not a disaster.

Unfortunately, Geoff had been playing with a hamstring injury (yet another leg injury) and was taken off before half time with Cedric coming on. This made us more attacking and suddenly we were occasionally getting out of our half. Cedric had an excellent chance before half-time to cut the lead, but the keeper was well positioned.

Simon came on for Andy at half-time as he was also suffering from a knock. Although we showed occasional forays into the HB half it was difficult to create clear chances. Simon putting the ball well over the bar on the stretch after intercepting a pass from defence.

As we tired and tried to get into the game HB inevitably had more space and ran out easy winners in the end 8-0. Rob refereed and was very good as usual.
