Match Report - Godalming 50s - 5 May 2024

After a quick 5 minute break our 50s on against Godalming in the second of the WFLA National Cup games. We started brightly and were getting the ball moved swiftly through the phases. We had several early efforts with Jason and Gareth both getting good saves out of their keeper. They too were getting some joy coming forward but Jon was equal to anything that our defenders didn't block or intercept. Unfortunately, one block went out for a corner and the resulting kick was fizzed across the box with Jon trying but just missing the interception. The strike from their left went back across Jon and into the corner. We pushed and pressed high for the rest of the half but again, both defence were on top and we went in one down.

We came out with nothing to lose. We knew we needed to get a victory to have a chance of progressing. We pressed high from the off and tried to pin them into their half, We went man for man leaving one back and pushing 4 forward as we strived to score. The longer the half went on the higher we pushed with everyone now joining in, aware we were leaving their striker unmarked. They got the break of the ball and rebound bounced back through us and to their striker on their right and his shot went low and passed Jon. We continued to give everything bringing on fresh legs but they were holding resolute and every shot we had their keeper was equal to. They defended deep and the game was played out with no more scoring.
