The game started with us firmly on the front foot. We moved the ball well from the first whistle with Gareth, Brett and Rob seeing plenty of the ball in midfield and Pete finding space up front. We utilised the width of the pitch and were pulling Ashford from one side to the other before creating a hole to get the ball into Brett and then joining from midfield to get a shot away.
Within minutes, we had established the lead. The ball was playing into Brett who turned quickly and leaving the defender in his wake before despatching the ball high into the net.
Ashford had struggled to bring a large squad and many of the players had already played the game against our 60s previously and they were soon showing with tired legs.
We continued to play the ball around them and created plenty of chances with the Ashford keeper being kept busy and, to be fair, showing he was up for the task. Eventually though our pressure told and we had a second with another clinical strike from Brett.
Within minutes it was 3 when Gareth was put through following an interchange with Rob, Pete and Brett.
We were now in complete control and comfortable. Despite creating chances, we couldn't extend the lead further and half time came with us 3 - 0 up.
The second half, started as the first had finished. We continued to push and soon had a fourth and it now looked as though we could score at will with Ashford tiring fast in the midday heat.
Unfortunately, again we suffered from indiscipline in not walking and we gave away a silly penalty for our fourth offence. This was dispatched by Ashford and they were on the scoreboard.
We regrouped and settled back down playing better football again. We created regular chances with Brett and Gareth both adding to our tally. Ashford made their job harder when they had a player blue carded for decent.
Our finally goal was a penalty awarded when Ashford ran for a fourth time.
There was no further action and the game finished Canterbury 7 - 1 Ashford Internazionale.
My thanks to all of players who all gave a great performance.
Additionally, to the supporters who turned up to watch.
Finally, congratulations to Brett for his hold up play and great goals which earned him the Player Of The Match.
