Away league match

On 12 October 2025, Bowers & Pitsea U15 Whites travelled to Waterside Farm, Cope SS8 9RA, to face Canvey Island Youth U15 Blues in a keenly contested league away fixture. Kick-off was at 10:00am under the watchful eye of referee Kevin Thomas, with a crowd of 50 in attendance. The Whites emerged victorious with a thrilling 5-3 win after 80 minutes of pulsating football.

Bowers & Pitsea deployed a 3-4-3 formation, aiming to balance defensive solidity with attacking flair. Stanley Martin-Gardener guarded the goal, supported by a back three of Rhys Hughes at right defender, Marcus Stanbury centrally, and Sebastian Cenciu on the left. The midfield quartet featured Cory Jennings on the right, Liam Stroud and Oliver Norton centrally, and Luca Cepoi on the left, tasked with both defensive duties and supplying the forwards. Up front, the attacking trio consisted of Benjamine Smith on the right, Marvellous Nbubueze as the central striker, and Lewis Baber on the left. The substitutes available were Mattie Bristow, Oliver Wakeling, and James Holgate.

The match began with early setbacks for Bowers & Pitsea as injuries forced two quick substitutions. At just six minutes, Luca Cepoi was replaced by Mattie Bristow due to injury, disrupting the left midfield position. Shortly after, at the 11th minute, Cory Jennings also limped off, making way for Oliver Wakeling on the right midfield. Despite these early blows, the Whites quickly found their rhythm.

The breakthrough came in the 21st minute when Mattie Bristow delivered a precise cross that found Marvellous Nbubueze, who finished clinically to open the scoring. Five minutes later, the striker turned provider, executing a clever back heel to set up Lewis Baber, who struck with his left foot to double the lead. The attacking interplay was a testament to the fluidity expected from the 3-4-3 setup, with forwards and midfielders combining effectively.

Bowers & Pitsea extended their advantage in the 33rd minute when Sebastian Cenciu launched a long pass into the box, allowing Nbubueze to slot home with his right foot. However, the visitors’ defensive frailties were exposed soon after as Canvey Island Youth pulled one back in the 35th minute, capitalising on a defensive mistake to score with a right-footed finish.

The first half concluded with Bowers & Pitsea leading 3-1, a scoreline reflecting both their attacking prowess and occasional lapses at the back.

Early in the second half, tactical adjustments saw Luca Cepoi return to the field at the 50th minute, replacing Oliver Wakeling, while Cory Jennings came back on for Benjamine Smith five minutes later. These changes aimed to restore balance and inject fresh energy into the midfield and attack.

Canvey Island Youth reduced the deficit further in the 56th minute, again exploiting defensive errors to score from close range. The visitors’ defence was under pressure, but fortune favoured them in the 68th minute when an own goal from the opponents restored their two-goal cushion.

Bowers & Pitsea responded emphatically in the 71st minute as Mattie Bristow struck from outside the box, following a long pass from Nbubueze. The right-footed effort was a spectacular reminder of the Whites’ attacking threat.

Shortly after, Marcus Stanbury received a yellow card for a bad tackle, signalling the physical intensity of the contest. At the 73rd minute mark, Rhys Hughes was forced off due to injury, with James Holgate coming on to fill the right defender role.

The Whites sealed their victory in the 77th minute when Lewis Baber scored his second of the match, finishing inside the box with his left foot after a long pass from Cory Jennings. This goal effectively ended Canvey Island Youth’s hopes of a comeback.

Throughout the match, Rhys Hughes stood out for his defensive contributions and was deservedly named Player of the Match despite his injury-enforced early exit. His presence at right back was crucial in both thwarting opposition attacks and supporting forward play.

In a game marked by early adversity, tactical reshuffles, and a flurry of goals, Bowers & Pitsea U15 Whites demonstrated resilience and attacking verve to secure a memorable 5-3 victory on the road.
