The Gaffer once said "big games require big players to get big results." We don't really know what that means though and it clearly didn't work because we lost our third 7s game in a row.
Having previously ruled himself out of playing, Jack Cryer rocked up in his fluorescent socks to make up the numbers on a Windsday night up in Longbenton. The Juniors put out a pretty strong side, with all the lads on the pitch having got plenty of game time already this year.
They say quality speaks for itself, but here at Berocca Juniors we like to occasionally show a shred of quality, and then shout about it for days afterwards. Such glimpses of quality were demonstrated in the first half, as both Harry Van Der Hoek and Jack Edwards had effort on goal that nearly broke the deadlock.
However, issues arose through the link up play slacking, and too many men looking for the long ball. Our short passing game soon went out the window, discarding our 5-a-side roots. That's why we conceded four first half goals, it wasn't very good really.
At the start of the second half, the difficulty of the task was compounded by losing Van Der Hoek to a nasty looking ankle injury after colliding with the keeper. But losing HVDH to a fractured ankle changed the lads' fortune in the match, as we were forced to adjust our shape.
Dafydd De Gea then swapped teams to make up the numbers, meaning Jake Hawkyard joined Harri Saunders and James Sproston to make a three-man defence. The added security, and no No.9 up top, gave the Juniors more options in the build up play. That play led to Tom Coulthard's first goal, as Saunders laid it off to him, and the big man belted it in from 15 yards out.
Coulthard added another shortly after, this time after good hassling from Edwards. With the game on, the Juniors looked to get more goals, but a swift counter attack ended the team's chances, as Bayern Med 7s scored with the last kick of the game.
There's lots of positives for the lads to take though, as the team controlled large periods of the game, against a side that look like winning the league. However, losing Van Der Hoek is a sickener for the lads, being a massive character in the dressing room as well as a deadly finisher on it. Everyone at #BJFC wishes the Aussie a speedy recovery.
As always big love to Mob Kitchen for bringing out the yellow in our eyes.
