Hemsworth Town (H) 1-10

For those of you that remember Hemsworth were the team that we played preseason last year on the fantastic 4G facility which we lost 10-4. When I spoke to them they were division 2 in the Selby league. How we have ended playing them again in our division only the FA knows!

A challenging game today, but one I am glad we played, as some of you also said when discussing after the match, as we will be able to see how the team reacts and what their character is like.

There were several genuinely encouraging moments and some clear signs of progress in the areas we have been working on despite the heavy scoreline. We created some good chances, showed bravery in possession, and passed longer. The team produced one outstanding team goal when James collecting the ball in defence played a superb long pass to Harry, who spun in behind the defence, this was exactly what we were asking, although the composure and lob finish itself was all about individual quality and brilliance. Early recognition, forward pass and decisive finish. A brilliant moment and fully deserved.

We started brightly and the new App we have been using (thank you Mark and the analytical team for stepping in whilst I refereed) clearly demonstrated we had a positive first half. Pressing well and looking to play forward early. The team created two good chances through quick transitions and intelligent movement. Our passing combinations in midfield were positive, and we looked confident when stepping into space. Defensively we were competitive in duels and made several important recoveries. When we held our shape, we looked organised and difficult to break down.

Into the second half and has the game went on, we became stretched and lost our structure at key moments. This made us vulnerable, especially when players drifted away from their roles. With a new defensive unit playing their first game together, any gaps were ruthlessly punished.

Despite this, we continued to create chances, one excellent move down the right, a long range effort from Ivy that forced a save and a late opportunity from a corner. The team kept on trying to play when the momentum shifted.

PPotM = Harry took his goal brilliantly and worked hard throughout, continually trying to find space in behind.

CPotM = James, excellent calmness, passing range and his assist was top quality showing real intelligence.
