Home league match
3pm on a Sunday is a bad enough time to be playing. Throw in 30 deg heat and it just topped it right off. With a stack of players out due to injuries or prior engagements, the bottom of the barrel was scrapped and a team sheet was put in.
Toowong was a solid team with a few handy players in their squad. They took control of the game early with retaining possession and breaking up any attacks Axis could muster. Ham pulled off a save for the cameras 25 mins into the game when one of the Toowong midfielders found himself in yards of space just outside the 18 and hit a knuckle ball that was going to creep inside the post. Just when we thought we would be going into the break even, Toowong get a cross to the back post where they had a player waiting to put it away. 1-0 down at Half Time.
A shape change at half time saw Axis with more of the ball and getting into some great positions. Dom got onto the end of a great through ball onto to see his effort come back off the post. A free kick in a good position was put just over the bar by Juan. It didn't seem to be our day. Then a free kick about 30 yards out in the centre of the field was given. Knowing the keeper was suspect the idea was to get it on target hard and make sure there was players there to put away the scraps. Fehlhaber hit the ball well over the wall and getting it to bounce just in front of the keeper, who spills it and Toby was the quickest to react.
Toowong kept pushing Axis on the counter but the defence was up to the task. There was a moment when a Toowong player found himself pretty much through on goal but Chucky was there to assess the situation and did a necessary foul before they got to close to the box. He got himself a yellow for his troubles but we were still tied 1-1.
The last 10 saw axis pushing higher on the pitch chasing the winner. The opportunity arose when the keeper handled a backpass from his defender who was pressured into playing the ball back. The resulting freekick was saved on the line at the backpost. In the dying seconds Toowong had a freekick of their own about 30 yards out on the right side of the field. The play was almost a replica of their opening goal but this time they see their effort come back off the post.
Points are shared and the referee was a wanker.
