Home league match
Round 9 saw the last day of Autumn and temps that were fit for the middle of winter. Axis of Evil hosted Bardon Latrobe on the last game of the round with both teams looking to cement their position up the top end of the table. A full squad card saw some players rested and a strong team named.
Both teams must have been feeling the cold because a load of errors saw little joy for either side in the first half. The only highlight was the bobble of field 3 getting the better of one of Bardon's defenders who went to clear the ball but ended up miskicking the ball into his arm while inside his 18 yard. Toby coolly dispatched the resulting penalty and Evil goes into the half time with a fortunate 1-0 lead.
The second half started a little brighter with both teams now being able to land 5m passes and string a number of them together. Evil was starting to get on top with a number of close opportunities until someone turned half of the fields lights off. The game was stopped until the lights were back on which ended up taking close to 15 minutes. During that time the players tried keeping warm but the stop took it's toll with Toby succumbing to a calf strain and was subbed as the game restarted.
The injection of fresh legs resulted in an almost instant impact with Fehlhaber, fresh into the second half, taking a quick long throw down the line to release Dom who put in a great cross for Kyle to put away with his second attemp after the first was well blocked by a defender.
Bardon pulled one back not long after with a questionable goal. With no linesman the referee did her best to officiate the game but missed the alleged offside run from the Bardon attacker who finished the 1 on 1 effort.
Evil put the game to bed with 10 to go. Dom returned the favour with a throw to Fehlhaber who strolled towards the top of the box and unleashed an effort travelling toward the bottom right corner of the goal. Somehow the antiquated keeper pulled off a save but parried the ball into the path of Kyle who calmly slotted for his second of the night.
Tempers flared in the closing moments of the game with some off the ball incidents causing the ref to calmly ask both teams to calm down and play football. The final whistle went and the reception from the visiting team was as cold as the weather.
Evil finish the first round undefeated in well in the hunt for the elusive minor premiership. 1 point off Mount Gravatt who also won their game.
