Written by Kevin Goodwin:
Ashley FC sealed their third league win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Clifton St Vincents, courtesy of a first half Chris Barrett strike.
In the early stages, Ben West found himself in unfamiliar territory inside the opposition box but his effort was blocked, whilst moments later, Ollie Bendall fired wide of the post from a good position. The only goal of the game came mid-way though the half; Bendall turned well 25 yards out before unleashing a powerful drive which was pushed away by the 'keeper, but an attempted cut-back fell nicely to Barrett who struck left-footed into the top corner. At the other end, Clifton St Vincents went close with a number of set-pieces but Paul Freeman was largely untroubled.
In the second half, Ashley stepped up their game and had numerous chances to double their advantage. Kevin Goodwin lobbed over the bar, despite having time and space, after being found by Barrett. Goodwin then saw a hooked effort on the turn pushed around the post by the 'keeper. Further chances followed, the best perhaps falling to David Brown. Will Freeman's cut back found the sub but he struck the post from close-range. Andy Smith was off-target from an inswinging corner, before Goodwin tried his luck once again after cutting inside his marker, but a right-foot shot was tipped around the post.
It was a solid performance by Ashley; the clean sheet was extremely welcome, and on another day, we could have scored three or four. Next up is a trip to Bikkle Sports in the GFA Cup.
