Away league match

Alleyn Old Boys 3s gave a spirited performance in the season opener, with a bare 11 causing West Wickham problems before running out of steam in the final quarter of the game.

WW started the game on top, creating some openings that required some last ditch blocks from defenders and saves from Will Knapp. AOB settled and were dangerous from set-pieces, debutant Robbie Matthews forcing a great save out of out of their keeper.

Without any subs, AOB were dealt a cruel blow by the referee, awarding a dubious penalty for handball from Jacek Bilinksi at point blank range in the 37th minute, that replays showed did not strike his arm. The sooner the referees have video-assistance, the sooner these decision won't swing matches.

A second goal just before half time flattered West Wickham, with the AOB players still reeling from the penalty from minutes earlier. Nevertheless, it was a decent first half performance that gave hope for the second half.

The away fans were given something to celebrate 10 minutes after the break, with youth-team graduate Matthews superbly heading in Stuart Young's free kick to get AOB back into the game. Young had a chance shortly after to equalise shortly afterwards, but was unable to lift the ball over the advancing keeper.

The AOB fightback was halted as the team ran out of steam with injuries piling up. Paul Yates limped off with 15 minutes to go and West Wickham scored two late goals against the brave 10 men to secure a flattering scoreline.

On the whole, a frustrating opening day for the promoted side, but some promising performances mean there were some positives to take from the day.

There is a feeling of "what might have been" had a full squad been present on the day. Fans showed little sympathy for playboy forward Ben Tavassoli who was absent with supposed salmonella, angrily chanting "where were you at 3am" towards the end of the game.
