Ely's experience enabled a solid win over a youthful Willingham side. With several players lacking match fitness, game management was going to be key. The visitors shook off some early counter attempts from the hosts and settled into a rhythm, winning the ball back in midfield and defence and rebuilding play time and again.
Until the opener scored by Conor Gibbs in the 42nd minute, there had only been a handful of chances created with the best falling to James Gillett who saw his low strike at the near post, tipped just wide by the fully outstretched Willingham keeper.
A few reshuffles at halftime saw some fresh legs introduced and slight changes to positions saw results soon after with Cameron Laing finishing a nice team move.
Conor Gibbs reintroduction saw him seal his brace in the closing minutes after a nice lobbed pass from skipper on the day, Danny Flack.
Joint man of the match goes to Cameron Laing and Ash Sizer. Laing made a couple of clearances in the first half, and provided lots of energy going forward in the second including a well taken goal and created numerous chances. Ash won every header and allowed the team to play out of the back with a sense of comfort.
Props have to go to the young Willingham keeper who made a number of excellent saves.
