Away league match

Soham started brightly pressing well and forcing a few corners in the opening minutes. Ely took about 15 minutes to settle into the game, with some nervous play and mistimed passes in defensive areas.

However, Ely started having success with chances on the break and finding loads of space out wide, and in behind Soham's high line.

Left back Peter Kelleway's clearance up the line, landed to a Soham defender, who held the ball too long and lost possession from Will Cooper's pressure. Cooper then managed to beat both defenders with some mazy dribbling and slotted home for the opener.

Ely had the majority of chances in the remainder of the half, and a well-placed free kick from Danny Flack saw Will Cooper snag his brace. Soham's other chance coming from a long-range strike that hit the top of the crossbar.

HT Soham 0 - 2 Ely

Couple of half-time changes, including Mark Cooney making his debut for Ely.

After some pushing and shoving on an Ely defensive corner, after the corner was cleared a Soham player grabbed Cooney by the throat, and some handbags ensued.

Several players from both sides rushed in, some pushing, some trying to separate the players.

Some of the Soham bench rushed onto the field wanting to get in on the action on the far side.

Referee Ray Collings swiftly dealt with things, leaving both teams down to 10 men. And Cooney's debut kept to a brief 8 minute cameo and facing a few weeks suspension along with his opposite number.

Shortly after, one of Soham's bench pitch invaders subbed on, promptly making a run down the left flank, and delivering a pinpoint cross. Soham 1 - 2 AFC Ely.

The remainder of the half saw end to end football, with the extra space giving both teams time to run at each other. Ely managing to weather the storm and claim their first victory since round 2.

Danny Flack earning man of the match for his retention and tackling in the middle of the park and dropping into centre back for the remainder of the match after the team was down to ten men.
