The first half saw Villa start brightly against the league leaders, but without finding the breakthrough. At the 30-minute mark, Joshua Colville was shown a yellow card for persistent infringements, a caution that hinted at the physical nature of the contest. Two minutes later, Mathew Burke tested the opposition goalkeeper with a shot that went wide, signalling Villa’s intent to press forward. Kyle Irwin came agonisingly close to scoring in the 36th minute when his effort struck the crossbar, a moment that could have changed the complexion of the game.
Rosario responded with their own aggression, receiving a yellow card in the 40th minute, reflecting the competitive edge of the match. Villa’s Daniel McFarland had a chance just before half time but saw his shot saved, leaving the score goalless at the interval.
The second half began with Villa making a tactical substitution in the 61st minute, bringing on Carson Mann for Daniel McFarland to inject fresh energy into the right forward position. Mann’s first attempt on goal came in the 65th minute but flew high over the bar. Another tactical change followed in the 70th minute as Mark Gilliland replaced Mathew Burke up front, aiming to bolster the attacking options.
However, the breakthrough came against Villa just a minute later. Rosario capitalised on a defensive mistake to score the only goal of the match, putting the hosts ahead and forcing Villa to chase the game. The situation worsened for Villa when Curtis Shannon was forced off injured in the 72nd minute, with James Edwards coming on to fill the right back role.
Villa pushed forward in search of an equaliser, with Mark Gilliland firing wide in the 77th minute. The match remained tense and physical, with James Edwards receiving a yellow card for a tackle in the 82nd minute. Matthew Edwards had a late chance in the 88th minute but was denied by a save from the Rosario keeper.
In added time, James Edwards tested the goalkeeper again but saw his effort saved, and despite Villa’s efforts, they were unable to find a leveller. The match concluded with Rosario holding on to their slender advantage.
Villa’s formation showed promise with attacking intent and midfield support, but defensive lapses and an untimely goal proved costly. The substitutions brought fresh legs and attempts on goal but ultimately could not overturn the deficit. Referee Gavin Morgan oversaw the match with a decent performance, issuing three yellow cards in a competitive encounter. Abbey Villa will look to regroup and build on their attacking moments as they prepare for their next league challenge.
