Abbey Villa F.C 2nds hosted Rosario YC 2nds at Londonderry Park on Saturday 25th October 2025, with kick-off at 2:00pm in a league fixture. The 90-minute contest ended in a 1-0 defeat for Abbey Villa, courtesy of an own goal that proved decisive in a tightly contested encounter. Referee Daniel Kenny oversaw the match, which saw both sides battle hard but ultimately Abbey Villa were unable to find the net despite several promising attempts.

Abbey Villa lined up in a 3-5-2 formation, deploying three defenders at the back with Joshua Colville on the left, Matthew Edwards centrally, and Jake Rainey on the right. The midfield five consisted of James Edwards on the right flank, Marcus McGrath, Louis Gault-Reid, and Kyle Irwin occupying central midfield roles, with Thomas Drysdale operating on the left wing. Up front, Matthew Burke and Carson Mann formed the striking partnership, expected to combine pace and creativity to break down the opposition defence. Ross Murray took his place between the sticks as goalkeeper. The substitutes named were James King, James Boyd, and Jude Strain.

The match began with intensity, and early on, Rosario receiving a yellow card for a deliberate trip in the 14th minute. Villa sought to impose themselves but found the visitors resilient. The first half ended goalless, with both sides cancelling each other out as the teams went in at the break locked at 0-0. Rosario ending the half looking like the better side though.

Shortly after the restart, Villa came close to breaking the deadlock. Carson Mann tested the opposition goalkeeper with a shot in the 48th minute, which was well saved. Two minutes later, Thomas Drysdale also forced a save, showing Villa’s intent to press forward early in the second half. However, the visitors remained disciplined and continued to frustrate the home side.

In the 55th minute, Villa were forced into an early substitution due to injury, with James King replacing Louis Gault-Reid in midfield. This change slightly disrupted the rhythm but Villa continued to push for a breakthrough. Marcus McGrath had a chance in the 59th minute but his effort flew high over the bar.

Jake Rainey then tested the goalkeeper again in the 64th minute with a fantastic free kick that was met with an exeptional save from the Rosario keeper. Minutes later, Mathew Burke followed with an attempt of his own, but his effort was met with a yellow card for deliberate handball as the ball crossed the line, halting Villa’s momentum.

The crucial moment arrived in the 68th minute when Villa conceded an own goal. Ross Murray’s misjudgement in goal led to the ball ending up in his own net, handing Rosario the lead. This unfortunate error proved costly and shifted the balance firmly in favour of the visitors.

Rosario received another yellow card for a late tackle in the 72nd minute. Tactical changes followed as James Boyd replaced Thomas Drysdale in the 75th minute, aiming to inject fresh energy on the left flank.

James Edwards had a chance to equalise in the 77th minute but his header went wide, missing a vital opportunity. Further tactical adjustments saw Jude Strain come on for Marcus McGrath in the 79th minute, as Abbey Villa searched desperately for an equaliser.

Despite late pressure, Villa’s attempts were repeatedly thwarted. Mathew Burke’s effort in the 86th minute was saved again, and Carson Mann’s shot in the 89th minute was also denied by the opposition goalkeeper. The home side’s persistence was admirable but ultimately fruitless.

Matthew Edwards stood out throughout the match, marshalling the defence with composure whilst dealing with a Rosario's quality CF earning him Villas's Man of the match accolade. Villa’s defensive trio worked hard to keep the visitors at bay, but the solitary own goal and missed chances proved the difference.

In the end, Villa were left to rue missed opportunities and a costly error as Rosario secured a narrow 1-0 victory at Londonderry Park. The defeat leaves Villa with much to reflect on as they look to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
