Home league match
With the bad weather still causing havoc to the majority of pitches in Derbyshire, Belper offered us the opportunity of playing however it would be on their 3G pitch again. This gave them a massive advantage, particularly given there good form, them being top of the league and us with no first choice goal keeper and only one sub. Would it be a step too far for our team that had really been beginning to gel with everyone present...... ????
With Josh being unavailable due to other commitments it was down to our stand in Goalie Will to step up to the mark. We’ve every confidence in Wills ability with him previously having played in goal for Pride Park so all should be good. That was until we received a message saying Will had come down ill so would have to pull out of the game ??. In view of this we had a decision to make, forfeit the game or ask an outfield player to step up. Thankfully Finlay put his hand up and although no regular goalie, we decided to play and give it our best shot believing even if Finlay let a few in, we had the quality to score more !!
But with 5 minutes before kick off who should appear “like a night in shining armour” (holding a tissue to his nose ??)... was Will !! Clearly unwell but just happy to help. This really gave all the lads a lift just before kick off, just what we needed with a limited squad.
The first half commenced and the spirits were clearly high, I was witnessing some of the best football I had seen the boys play. The hard work Brendan is doing on the training field was clearly beginning to show and soon we were 1-0 up and 100% deserved. A neat pass from Finlay allowed Connor to calmly slot it into the back of the net.
Next up was Harry, a fantastic shot gave there goalie absolutely no chance and we were 2-0 up.
And then for Archie, another fantastic run of play led to our third and this was the final result. 3-0 and yet another clean sheet.
All 3 goals absolutely first class and what a performance, on another day it could have been 6 or 7..... easily !
It was almost impossible to pick man of the match because every single one of the lads could of had it. Isaac grabbed every opportunity given to him not putting a foot wrong and showing some great grit and determination, Shaun was excellent yet again at the back, the boys scoring were all worthy of it, the midfield bossed the game like I had never seen, Finlay looked eager and sharp setting up 2 of the goals, I could go on and on. Through pure dedication and commitment however both Brendan and I were in full agreement that this weeks award should go to Will. He was clearly under the weather and arguably shouldn’t have been there but knew we would be in trouble without him so well done and big thanks to Will.
Onto next week where we are up against a very good team in Toton and try to keep this 100% record and clean sheet going ??????
